Planning Your Business

PLANNING YOUR BUSINESS

Write Your Business Plan

Every big endeavor needs a roadmap. Your business plan should define your business, describe your customer base, and include projections on your revenues. In most cases, a defined business plan will be required to secure a loan to fund your startup costs. The professional team at SCDC can consult with you in all phases of your business development journey.

Choose a Location

Whether you’re purchasing land to construct your own enterprise or setting up an at-home business, selecting a proper location for your business operations is crucial. We recommend you first contact the City of Liberal Building Department. Subject matter experts will be able to guide you through the building and zoning ordinances to consider before you commit your resources to a specific location for your business type.

The City of Liberal has created a Property Development Flowchart to assist businesses with navigating the steps to certify a location for business occupancy.

The Seward County Development Corporation maintains a building and site search map for industrial and commercial properties to help prospective business owners identify available locations to establish their business.

Where you choose to locate may be dependent upon your type of business. You will need to research any applicable business licenses or permits required to operate in the state of Kansas. The Kansas Business One Stop website provides a list of business types and licensing organizations so you can review regulatory and business space specifications needed before you commit to a location.

Fund Your Project

Starting a business can come with significant upfront costs. Whether you’re securing a business loan or self-funding, business incentives and additional loan resources can help fill in financial gaps to get your business started.

The City of Liberal and Seward County Development Corporation support a variety of loan and grant programs you can find through the button below.

The State of Kansas also offers a variety of incentives and loans to support your business needs:

We recommend consulting with the Seward County Development Corporation for the most current information on loan and grant resources you may be eligible to receive.

Choose a Business Structure

How you structure your business is important. From a sole proprietorship to an LLC or corporation, knowing the difference between these business structures can help you select a setup that best fits your needs.

Be sure to consult with your accountant or attorney before selecting your business structure.

Secure Your Business Name

Picking a name for your business can be a challenge. It’s important to select a name that fits your business and marketing strategy to help your business stand out. From a legal aspect, you’ll need to find an original name that isn’t already registered with the Kansas Secretary of State. To see if your business name idea is available, visit the Kansas Business Filing Center search page.
