Operating Your Business

OPERATING YOUR BUSINESS

Open a Business Bank Account

After you receive your federal EIN and your business license, you can proceed to open a business bank account. Keeping your business account separate from your personal bank account has many benefits, including added security of your personal information, the ability to accept payments under your business name, optional lines of credit for emergencies, and the ability to authorize your employees to make purchases using the business account. Many banks offer financial perks when you create an account, so it is worthwhile to comparison shop for the best rates and options.

Hiring Employees

As a business owner, there are important procedures you must follow when hiring employees. Your first step is to create an account with the Kansas Department of Labor (DOL). You will use your account to apply for your state unemployment tax number, file quarterly wage reports and unemployment tax returns, and more.

The KDOL has created an Employer Handbook Guide which helps employers understand their legal requirements and procedures.

Join the Chamber of Commerce

Connecting with other business owners in Liberal gives you the opportunity to learn from others as you begin and start to grow your business. By joining the Liberal Area Chamber of Commerce, you will benefit from networking opportunities, business referrals, advertising opportunities, professional development, legislative advocacy efforts, and much more. You will find that Liberal is a friendly, welcoming community that supports economic growth for all industries and sectors.

Training and Certification

Another excellent avenue for networking and professional development opportunities is partnering with the Seward County Community College Business and Industry office. The B&I office promotes training opportunities for business professionals and staff and is able to connect you with educational programs to grow your local workforce needs through training and certification courses. Industry partners from around the area have relied on the SCCC Business & Industry team to create and administer content-specific training programs for employees, and the same can be done for your business.
